About Us

Serving the One by Serving the Many

If you choose to spend your Sunday with us, you’ll find both community and spiritual restoration. We don’t make rules about who is accepted or worthy. We just want to help each other come to know, love, and serve God more fully. We want people to know we are Christians by our love.

Who Are The Disciples of Christ

The Disciples of Christ denomination is a  movement of more than 3,000 congregations in the United States and Canada. It began in America in the 19th century during the Restoration Movement. The movement’s goals were to reform the church from within and to unify all Christians in a single body modeled after the New Testament church.

There were four outstanding leaders of the movement: Thomas Campbell was the organizer; his son, Alexander, the theologian; Walter Scott and Barton W. Stone, the evangelists.

The Disciples movement grew rapidly, with evangelists being sent to the Ohio and Mississippi valleys as well as to the Southern states. One such evangelist, Jacob Creath, Jr., preached the first sermon by a Disciple evangelist in Louisiana under the magnolia trees near St. Francisville.

The congregation of First Christian Church began in 1938. As the congregation grew, it moved from the Holsum Bakery on DuFrocq Street, to a church building on Acadian Parkway, and finally to its current location at 8484 Old Hammond Highway.

What We Believe

Unity – All believers and seekers are welcome, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation.

Open Weekly Communion – The Disciples believe in celebrating the Lord’s Supper weekly. It is open to all who believe in Jesus Christ.

Baptism & Church Membership – Disciples practice baptism by immersion but respect the baptisms of other faith traditions.

Freedom of Belief – The Disciples say that where the Bible speaks, we speak. Where the Bible is silent, we are silent. Members are free to follow their conscience guided by the Bible, the Holy Spirit, prayer and study and are expected to extend that freedom to others.

Congregational Independence – Disciples of Christ churches are congregationally governed, but also affiliated with denominational entities.

Women in Ministry – The Disciples of Christ churches recognize the leadership of women in ministry.
