Worship at First Christian Church is joyful and life-giving. We invite you to worship with us!
We gather for worship together in our sanctuary on Sunday mornings at 8:30 a.m. and 10:50 a.m. (About four times per year, we'll have one, combined service at 10:00, usually followed by a church-wide lunch in Fellowship Hall.)
The 8:30 service is a small, more intimate gathering, with music, timely sermon, and communion as we gather around the table. (The Disciples receive communion every Sunday. Read more, here.)
The 10:50 service includes our choir, preaching from the pulpit, and communion administered to the pews by our deacons.
Between these two services, we offer a variety of educational opportunities in our Sunday morning classes fall through spring. These convene at 9:30 a.m. and are open to all – visitors and members alike!
Location & Parking
Our church is in the middle of Baton Rouge situated on Old Hammond Highway in Baton Rouge, about one-third of the way from Jefferson to Airline Highway — with entrances to the west of our sanctuary and one at the Old Hammond-Chevelle Drive traffic light. Lots of free parking awaits you, and specially-marked visitor spaces and spaces for the mobility impaired are on the west entrance drive.
Our sanctuary is the building nearest Old Hammond Highway, and the main entrance doors face the courtyard centering it and Fellowship Hall. There are a number of signs to direct you, as well as identifying each building on our campus.
Our address is:
First Christian Church - Disciples of Christ
8484 Old Hammond Highway
Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70809
Wherever you may be located within the greater Baton Rouge area, we are close to you — Come worship with us!
What To Expect Inside
Upon entering the narthex (foyer), our friendly congregation will greet you and offer you a service bulletin with that service's order of worship.
You'll see people dressed in "Sunday best" as well as "Sunday comfortable." Our only dress code is to wear some clothes!
Find a seat in any pew. You may prefer to follow along with the liturgy, readings, and songs from the bulletin in your hands and the Bible and hymnals in the pew racks, or by using the digital monitors available above the choir and on the west wall.
We will sing together, read Scripture together, pray together, and listen together to pastoral preaching. Our music style is blended, consisting of old, familiar hymns as well as more contemporary offerings.
We will share in the Lord's meal, together. Everyone is invited to the Lord's Table, as God has welcomed us.
The 8:30 service is a little less formal, with preaching from the aisle, open sharing of joys and concerns during prayer, and gathering around the table during communion.
At the 10:50 service, our Chancel Choir leads singing and usually offers an anthem or special piece of music, an acolyte assists in the procession, the choir and ministers are in robes, preaching is from the pulpit, and communion is distributed to the pews by our deacons. A brief Children's Sermon is presented, and those youngsters interested may then go to the Youth Building for our Children's Worship & Wonder program, where the message of the day is delivered in activities designed just for them!
We hope you will share your name and contact information with us in the Guest & Attendance Register found at the end of each pew. We'd love to follow up with you later in the week, and we do not share your information with anyone else.
Our services last about one hour.
You are invited to Fellowship Hall (directly south, across the courtyard, from the Sanctuary) at 9:30 a.m. for coffee and light breakfast treats.
Our sanctuary is accessible, as are all the buildings on our one-story campus. Accessible restrooms are located in the sanctuary building.
Listening assistance devices available for worship services. Please let a greeter or deacon know, or visit the A/V booth near the southwest corner of the sanctuary. If there are any other accommodations we can make for you, please let us know!
Worshiping with Children
Children are always welcome in worship at First Christian Church. Worship notebooks, crayons, pencils, etc., prepared with activities to engage younger minds with the Sunday lessons and theme are available in the narthex (foyer). Please return these items to the bookshelf after the service so we can update them for the following week.
If you'd prefer, your infants and toddlers will be warmly cared for in our professionally-staffed nursery. The nursery opens at 8:15 a.m. and is open until the close of the 10:50 service to care for infants and toddlers through age five. Our nursery staff is CPR-certified and have undergone rigorous background checks.
A Children's Sermon is offered at the 10:50 service, and children in the nursery may be brought to the sanctuary for this message.
Children's Worship & Wonder begins after the Children's Message, and youngsters age three through second grade may choose to follow the CW&W Greeter to the Youth Building for this creative, Bible-based program.
