09 West – The Lotus

Lotus plants grow in dirty water, but they also can clean toxins out of the water around them. They emerge on the water’s surface to bloom with beautiful purity.

The lotus may also represent the spiritual renewal made possible by the resurrection in that it is said it takes three days to rise through water to reach the surface – the same amount of time between Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. Lotus flowers close their petals at night as if they were in graves, and then reopen them when daytime sunlight arrives as if they were resurrected.

Under the lotus plants it lies,
    in the covert of the reeds and in the marsh.
The lotus trees cover it for shade;
    the willows of the wadi surround it. –Job 40:21-22
