26 East – Pentecost
James E. Tramel – Donor
Pentecost is celebrated on the 50th day after Easter Sunday. It commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit with wind and “tongues of fire,” upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ while they were in Jerusalem celebrating the Feast of Weeks, as described in the Acts of the Apostles. At the first Pentecost over 3000 people were baptized, creating the first church. This is why Pentecost is known as the birthday of the Christian church. The mitre shapes in the five-spoked wheel head out to proclaim the Gospel in all directions.
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. –Acts 2:1-4
