The word Epiphany comes from an ancient Greek word meaning manifestation. The feast celebrates that moment when, as recorded in the Christian Bible, and in particular in the Gospel of Matthew, those mysterious men from the East came to Bethlehem having followed a star from their homeland. Epiphany is celebrated on January 6, immediately following the Twelve Days of Christmas, and is of particular note in our area as the start date of Carnival season.

In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, magi from the east came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star in the east and have come to pay him homage.” —Matthew 2:1-2
