For Your Reflection....

A BRIDGE FOR COMMUNITY

Let’s be honest...explaining to others who we are as a church is not always an easy task.  With a name like “Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)”, you’ve said a mouthful, but you might find people looking at you like you haven’t clarified anything; or worse they may get the wrong impression.  I remember speaking with a woman about my church – upon hearing that we were part of the Christian Church (D.O.C.) she exclaimed, “that sounds like one of those ‘bible-thumping’ churches!  Are you one of those ‘bible-thumping’ churches?”  I explained that yes, we do believe in the Bible, but no, we probably are not the stereotypical ‘bible-thumping’ church that she is thinking of...read more

Senior Minister: Rev. Dr. David Chisham

David spent his early years in and around Wichita, KS.  Following high school, he attended college at Kentucky Christian University, and then on to seminary at Abilene Christian University.  While attending seminary he joined First Christian Church (D.O.C.) Abilene, TX, and has been a member of a Disciples congregation ever since.

David's ministry experience began with a congregation in Arlington, VA, where he learned the ropes of pastoring a congregation.  He was then called to a congregation in Rockville, MD which he served for seven years.  In July of 2013 he accepted the call of First Christian Church, Baton Rouge.

David says of himself, "I enjoy the diverse job description of settled pastor of a congregation.  From the standard duties of preacher, teacher, church administrator and worship leader, to the non-standard duties like plumber, opera singer, graphic designer and photographer, I try my best to lovingly serve God and my congregation with all my “heart, soul, mind and strength.”  Over the past ten years I have developed a special interest in exploring the creative arts in worship and congregational life.  I enjoy home improvement and DIY projects, spending time with my family and two greyhounds, cooking and eating good food, and have had a life-long interest in photography. My photos have been featured in displays at Johns Hopkins University, churches and non-profit organizations, and in the Smithsonian Institution (well, in my wife’s office in the Smithsonian Institution)."
