For Your Reflection....

Let’s be honest...explaining to others who we are as a church is not always an easy task.  With a name like “Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)”, you’ve said a mouthful, but you might find people looking at you like you haven’t clarified anything; or worse they may get the wrong impression.  I remember speaking with a woman about my church – upon hearing that we were part of the Christian Church (D.O.C.) she exclaimed, “that sounds like one of those ‘bible-thumping’ churches!  Are you one of those ‘bible-thumping’ churches?”  I explained that yes, we do believe in the Bible, but no, we probably are not the stereotypical ‘bible-thumping’ church that she is thinking more

At First Christian Church, we believe that it is our mission to be deeply engaged in our community and in our world.  Jesus reminds us in Matthew 25 that it is the reponsibility of the church and its members to respond to the needs in our world, as we would respond to the least of these.  Reaching out and connecting with the community has always been an important part of our ministry which is why we support a wide variety of missions and ministries. Here are just some of the ways we are involved in ministry to the local community beyond our doorsteps.

Outreach Giving

Each year, FCC BRLA designates over 3% of its budget to financial outreach in the local Baton Rouge area, totalling nearly $8,000. This allows us to support organizations such as Myriam's house, Reilly Center, St. Anthony's House and the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. Additionally, in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina (2005) and Gustav (2008), we have helped direct over $40,000 in Disciples of Christ Week of Compassion hurricane relief funds to the Baton Rouge area.

Safe Space for Meeting

The Grove is a drug and alcohol rehab program and center in Baton Rouge.  On the first Friday of the month they host a day long family meeting, and hold AA meetings on Sunday evenings.

Various AA groups also meet in the Baker Building on evenings. Please click here to visit the Baton Rouge AA website for more detailed and contact information.  Visit Our Calendar to see when they will be meeting at the church.

The Berean Homeschool Co-op also uses our facilities throughout the school year. Please contact the church office if you have questions about this group.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at LSU also uses our facilities for meeting space.  OLLI gives anyone over the age of 50 the opportunity to study a broad range of subjects to satisfy your thirst for literature, the creative arts, history, philosophy, science, food, languages, and contemporary issues. Their courses, coffees, and field trips are welcoming, democratic, and energetic. Find out more information by visiting their website

Southeast Ministries

Ecumenism in action! Southeast Ministries is a conglomeration of 27 local Christian congregations that provides residents of southeast Baton Rouge with food and financial assistance. The organization is and always has been 100% volunteer-operated to reduce overhead costs and to ensure that every penny goes towards their clients.

First Christian contributes to Southeast Ministries financially and provides them with volunteers.

The Interfaith Federation of Greater Baton Rouge

First Christian is commited to serving those in need in our community especially by partnering with our neighbors of all faith traditions. This is why we have been an active member of the Interfaith Federation of Greater Baton Rouge for decades. The Interfaith Federation includes members from over 30 Christian congregations, two synagogues and a growing number of Muslim, Buddhist, and B'hai congregations. Together with this organization, First Christian supports

• The Holy Grill soup kitchen

• Sounds of Comm-unity interfaith choir festival

• Interfaith Caregivers who provide transportation to senior citizens in need

• Kid's Cafe afterschool program

• Interfaith Dialogues held twice per year

Habitat for Humanity

At least once a year our church helps with a build through Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge.  Volunteers from the church help with much of the home construction including insulation, roofing, framing, flooring, painting, siding and landscaping.  Volunteers can also contribute financially.

Blood Drives

FCC regularly hosts two blood drives with the Our Lady of the Lake Blood Donor Center.  Holding one in the spring and one in the fall we invite our church members to visit the mobile blood center that comes to our campus on two specific Sunday mornings.  Please check with the church office for those dates.
